My historical novels Rebel Puritan and The Reputed Wife, Herodias (Long) Hicks Gardner Porter, colonial New England, travels, and whatever else seizes my fancy...
This is the account of Herodias/Harwood (Long) Hicks' petition for divorce from John Hicks in Newport, Rhode Island. She made the petition on December 3, 1643, and was granted a separation sometime in 1644.
This account was entered into Rhode Island's colonial records in summer, 1655 when George Gardner was charged with "keeping John Hicks his wife as his own." The document proved that the Hickses had been officially separated, and Gardner was acquitted.
